Until your endgame though, it will keep your squishier Dwellers safe, at least from Incident creatures that attack the Vault door. This shouldn't be a problem once your gauntlet Dwellers guarding the ground level are powerful enough, but it was still happening occasionally mid-game when I settled on this for a defensive design. The break in the elevator shaft on the far-right is essential to forcing any Deathclaws that manage to make it past the first three rooms from bee-lining it to a more vulnerable room farther down in the Vault. You'll need the rest of your lower Vault in good order, well-staffed by Dwellers, and with enough well armed/armoured level 50's to garrison the Warehouses up top (ignore the Diner, it's just there because I like the idea of giving the Dwellers some place to have lunch that isn't just chugging Nuka Cola lol). The setup I've worked out to turn the ground floor and first level of my Vault into a gauntlet for Incident creatures has served me well, but is a bit of a mid-game solution that wasn't practical earlier.
